Bardet-Biedl Syndrome UK (BBS) Conference
21st April
On the 21st April Philip Warford is speaking to families and carers at the BBS Conference 2018 about Planning for the Future with Wills & Trusts and Mental Capacity & Court of Protection.
The registered charity Bardet-Biedl Syndrome UK provide support to people with BBS as well as their families and carers. The charity’s aims are to “preserve and protect the health and promote the welfare of persons living with BBS” as well as to educate the public and health professionals about the subject of BBS.
Philip will introduce to the conference how families can protect a disabled child if they are no longer there to care for them using carefully prepared Wills and Trusts. Some people may already have a standard Will in place, but often do not realise that leaving inheritance to a disabled person could impact their means tested benefits or make them at risk of financial abuse.
He will also be discussing Court of Protection and Power of Attorney at this event, Philip will talk about planning for the future when a vulnerable or disabled child becomes an adult. The main idea is when someone turns 18 they have the right to make their own decisions, however, in reality this is not as clear or suitable.
Philip will explain about Court of Protection, the system in place which allows someone to be formally appointed to make decisions for a person with incapacity, and Power of Attorney a legal document in which you give authority to another person (known as an ‘Attorney’) to make certain decisions on your behalf.
In the afternoon session he will go into further details about these issues and options available to families to ensure their vulnerable loved one is protected throughout their lifetime.
Topics will also include:
