On 3 July 2019 Philip Warford is presenting a training event to East Sussex Parent and Carer’s Council about Decision Making covering topics: Mental Capacity, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection.

ESPaCC are a local organisation, their purpose is to develop a single voice representing all parents, carers and families of children or young people aged 0-25 with any additional need, in order to influence all services affecting and relevant to children and young people. The fundamental principle of the Mental Capacity Act is that no one has the right to make decisions on behalf of a person when they turn 18. The reality of this is not so clear for a disabled or vulnerable person as they may be able to make certain day to day decisions, but struggle to understand other more complex decisions concerning their finances and welfare.

When a person is unable to make such decisions their mental capacity is questioned, Philip will explain the principles around mental capacity and what families and carers should consider.

Philip will talk about Powers of Attorney and the legal appointment of another person to make decisions on behalf of an individual with a disability. Philip will also talk about the Court of Protection, who they are and what they do. Becoming a Deputy for a disabled or vulnerable person, the timescales and the costs.
