Parents In Partnership – Decision Making Seminar

15th January 2020

On 15th January 2020 Philip Warford is speaking to families and carers at Parents in Partnership (PIP) in East Croydon, Surrey about Decision Making which includes Mental Capacity, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection.

Parents in Partnership was formed in 1992. Their aim was to find out about the services available to families of children with special needs and disabilities and to influence decision makers within the local authority as to the services that would be most beneficial to families like themselves. They offer a range of services from information and support to activities and training. For further information click here.

At this event, Philip will be talking to parents and carers about what the future holds when their child reaches 18. The fundamental principle is that no one has the right to make decisions on behalf of a person when they become an adult. The reality of this is not so clear cut.

If a person lacks the ability to make a decision then their mental capacity is questioned, Philip will explain the principles around mental capacity and what families and carers need to consider.

Philip will go on to talk about Powers of Attorney. The appointment of someone to make decisions on behalf of a person with a learning disability, what and how they can be used.

Philip will also explain what the Court of Protection is, what they do, timescales and charges.
